April Finish - New Baby Quilt

Just a quick post to show my completed baby quilt for my brother's step-daughter's new baby.
This quilt was my April OMG at Elm Street Quilts. Here is my Beginning of April OMG Post

I had purchased this cute fabric with little animals on it - mice, foxes, bunnies and hedgehogs. I thought it went well together.
I used the blue bunnies and hedgehogs for the back. I do really like the backing.
Also, the quilt, itself, will be nice for my niece to lay on the floor and the baby to play on. The only thing that I was a bit undecided about is that it turned out a little dark. Although, maybe that will hide spills or whatever. Let's hope so anyway.

I guess, sometimes, when I work on a project for a while, I just get tired of seeing it or whatever. And then I just don't know if the person that receives it will like it. After all, it is handmade and not made in China.

Quilts to use for Real Life

In the beginning of my earlier quilting days, I used a very basic Singer sewing machine. I really had no clue what a "scrap quilt" was, but I loved the look of a quilt in one of my magazines. I just started purchasing different types of fabric - at Joann Fabric and I found some on ebay.

I sewed this quilt by hand by marking on the back of the pieces with an actual lead pencil and using "match points" After I pieced the entire top - twin size - I decided that I had enough "hand sewing". So I machine-quilted it on my small Singer machine that my husband purchased for me. It was tough-going, but I got it done. I did not know to change the length of my stitches. The stitches are very tight. Yikes!

Also, I did probably not know that some fabric was not really cotton. I purchased this dark blue for the narrow border. It is really an odd fabric, more like polyester and doesn't feel very nice.

This quilt really shows the wear. A couple of the seams are coming undone.

I will not be sewing quilts using match points again. However, what is strange about this quilt, though, is that I like it. It is comfortable for me and my cat. It has been used and abused. Plus, in reality, I do want the quilts that I sew to be used and enjoyed by the people in my life.

New Quilt for New Baby

My husband and I, along with my mother, are flying to my brother's house in Ft Myers, Florida, the end of April. My brother's step-daughter, just had a baby boy in December. So I decided to sew her a baby quilt to take along with me. I went to the quilt shop on Saturday, March 30, and the very lovely employee helped me choose these fabrics.

I am really excited to get this completed for my April One Monthly Goal at Elm Street Quilts. I have completed this quilt twice, already, and it goes pretty fast. It is called Ryan from Fat Quarter Baby. I like how it is just squares and rectangles - it makes the animals show up better in the quilt. Will be looking forward to linking my finish at the end of April, unless some unforeseen event keeps me from working on this little quilt.
